Section 1
The Six Natures of Planets (Swabhava)

Before predicting any dasha results, you must classify each planet's functional nature for the given ascendant. This is the foundation of the entire chapter.

Natural vs Functional Nature
Every planet has a natural nature (Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu = natural malefics; Jupiter, Venus, Moon, Mercury = natural benefics) AND a functional nature based on which houses it rules for a specific ascendant. These are different. A natural malefic like Saturn can be a functional benefic (e.g., Yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra ascendants). A natural benefic like Jupiter can be functionally problematic (e.g., for Gemini ascendant where it rules 7th and 10th — Kendradhipati Dosha). The 6 natures below refer to functional nature.
NatureWhich Houses?What it means
BeneficLord of 1, 5, 9 + YogakarakaTrikona lords. Always produce good results — wealth, fortune, spiritual growth. The best planets in any chart.
MaleficLord of 3, 6, 11, 8Trishadaya (3,6,11) + Dusthana (8). They create illness, enemies, debts, obstacles, sudden setbacks.
Karaka (Yogakaraka)One planet ruling both Trikona + Kendra, or their lords associatingMost powerful benefic. Trikona energy (fortune) + Kendra energy (action) = Rajayoga — success, fame, power.
NeutralLord of 2 and 12Neither strongly good nor bad. They take the colour of whatever they associate with.
Maraka (Death-giver)Lord of 2, 7. Also: lord of 3/6/11 when placed in 2nd/7th or associated with lords of 2nd/7th, 12th lord, or 8th lordCan bring death or severe suffering. 2nd and 7th houses are Maraka Sthanas.
MixedRules Trikona + Trishadaya (3,6,11) or Trikona + 8thDual lordship — one foot in a good house, one in a bad house. Results depend on associations.
Where is the 4th and 10th lord?
The 4th and 10th lords are deliberately missing from the table above. Their nature is variable due to Kendradhipati Dosha:

If a natural malefic (Saturn, Mars, Sun) owns the 4th or 10th — owning a Kendra "cleanses" it. It sheds its malefic nature and becomes auspicious.

If a natural benefic (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon) owns the 4th or 10th — it picks up Kendradhipati Dosha. It loses its natural benefic power and becomes neutral or slightly inauspicious.

Classify the 4th/10th lord based on the total lordship package (e.g., if 10th lord also owns a Trikona = Yogakaraka; if it also owns the 8th = Mixed).
Rahu/Ketu as Karaka
Rahu/Ketu placed in Kendra with a Trikona lord, OR in Trikona with a Kendra lord, also become Yogakaraka.
MASTER KEY: 1-5-9 = Benefic  |  3-6-8-11 = Malefic  |  2-12 = Neutral  |  2-7 = Maraka  |  4, 10 = Variable
Section 2
Self-Antardasha Rule

When a planet runs its OWN antardasha within its own mahadasha (e.g., Jupiter MD > Jupiter AD), it does NOT give results based on its functional nature (Atmabhavanuroopa or Swabhava). Instead, it gives Samanaya (normal) results based on its sign placement:

Sign PlacementQuality of Results
Exaltation (Uchcha)Best — planet at peak power
MooltrikonaVery good — productive and comfortable
Own Sign (Swakshetra)Good — planet at home, relaxed
Friendly SignDecent — supported but not fully free
Enemy SignBad — uncomfortable, weakened
Debilitation (Neecha)Worst — powerless and suffering
Worked Example
Saturn is malefic for Leo ascendant (lord of 6 & 7). But during Saturn MD > Saturn AD, we DON'T judge it as malefic. We check — is Saturn exalted (Libra)? Own sign (Capricorn/Aquarius)? Debilitated (Aries)? The sign placement decides the result, not the lordship.
Section 3
Five Planetary Relationships & Their Effects

A planet gives its results in the antardasha of planets that are Sambandhi (related) to it. According to Phaladeepika by Manteshwara, two planets are considered related if they share ANY of these 5 connections:

RelationshipWhat it meansExample
Parivartana (Exchange)Each planet sits in the other's sign. Strongest bond.Jupiter in Aries, Mars in Sagittarius
Mutual AspectThey aspect each other from their positions.Mars in 1st aspects Saturn in 7th, and vice versa
ConjunctionBoth sit together in the same house/sign.Venus and Mercury both in Gemini
Kendra PositionOne is in 1/4/7/10 from the other.Sun in 1st, Moon in 4th — 4 houses apart
Trikona PositionOne is in 1/5/9 from the other.Mars in 1st, Jupiter in 5th
MNEMONIC: P-A-C-K-T ("packed" with relationships!)
Additional Connection Method
Apart from PACKT, we can also check whether the mahadasha lord is placed in the sign of the antardasha lord or vice-versa. For example, if MD lord Jupiter is placed in Aries (Mars's sign) and AD lord is Mars — Jupiter is sitting in Mars's house, creating a connection.

What does having a relationship actually DO?

The relationship is a CONNECTION — like a wire between two devices. The wire carries whatever current the devices produce. When MD lord and AD lord are related (any of PACKT), their energies get linked together:

Both benefic and related: The connection amplifies good results. Example: Jupiter (9th lord) exchanges with Mercury (5th lord) — powerful Rajayoga. During their mutual dashas, education, wealth, and spiritual growth flourish.

One benefic + one malefic, and related: The malefic energy enters the benefic's results. Example: 5th lord exchanges with 6th lord = Dainya Yoga. The 5th house (children, education) gets polluted by the 6th house (illness, enemies).

Both malefic and related: Two harmful forces amplify each other — compounded problems.

When they are NOT related, they operate independently — covered in Section 4.

Sadharmi (Similar Nature)

Sadharmi means "of similar nature and characteristics." Planets of the same functional group cooperate naturally:

GroupMembersWhy they cooperate
Trikona lordsLords of 1, 5, 9All benefic — mutual periods bring fortune, education, spiritual growth
Kendra lordsLords of 1, 4, 7, 10All angular — mutual periods bring action, achievement, material results
Trishadaya lordsLords of 3, 6, 11All malefic — mutual periods bring struggle, but also competitive success
Section 4
When MD & AD Lords Are NOT Related

What happens when the mahadasha lord and antardasha lord have NONE of the 5 relationships (PACKT)? Throughout this chapter, "associated" or "related" means sharing at least one PACKT connection. "Not associated" means none.

Mahadasha LordAntardasha LordResult
BeneficBenefic (unrelated)Neutral — MD lord's good effects continue. AD lord's results bypassed.
BeneficMalefic (unrelated)Mostly okay — MD good continues, but traces of evil sneak in from AD.
MaleficBenefic (unrelated)WORSE results. The benefic AD cannot help without a connection.
MaleficMalefic (unrelated)EVEN WORSE. No protection anywhere. Double damage.
Key insight: Benefic MD = protective shield (absorbs damage). Malefic MD = open wound (everything makes it worse).

Kendra-Trikona Lords (Principle 4)

When lords of Kendra and Trikona are associated (PACKT), good results flow during their mutual periods. If not associated, the mahadasha lord's results alone continue. But results become inauspicious if they are placed in 2/12 or 6/8 positions from each other.

Dangerous Positions
If MD lord and AD lord are in 2/12 or 6/8 houses from each other — obstacles, loss of position, wealth, and mental disturbance are guaranteed.

Understanding 2/12 and 6/8

2/12 position: The 2nd house from any planet is its "sustenance" and the 12th is its "loss." When MD and AD lords sit 2/12, one drains the other's resources. They cannot nourish each other. Result: financial strain, disconnect, lack of support.

6/8 position: The 6th from any planet is its "enemy" and the 8th is its "death." When MD and AD lords sit 6/8, they are in active conflict. Result: enmity, sudden crises, health problems, legal battles. 6/8 is worse than 2/12.

Worked Example
MD lord Jupiter in Aries. AD lord Saturn in Virgo. Aries to Virgo = 6 houses = 6/8 position. During Jupiter MD > Saturn AD: illness, enemy obstacles, sudden reversals.
Section 5
Yogakaraka Shield Rules

The Yogakaraka is the most protective planet in a chart. Four principles show its shielding power:

#RuleWhat this means
P5Yogakaraka MD + Maraka AD = Rajayoga survivesEven a death-giving planet cannot kill the fortune of a Yogakaraka period. Benefits keep increasing.
P6Yogakaraka MD + unrelated benefic AD = YK results still flowSo powerful that even an unrelated benefic carries its blessings forward.
P7Yogakaraka MD + associated benefic AD = happinessBest case Both good, both connected = pure happiness and success.
P8Rahu/Ketu in 9th or 10th = Yogakaraka results9th (strongest trikona) + 10th (strongest kendra) — Rahu/Ketu here act like Yogakaraka.
Yogakaraka = UMBRELLA. No matter how hard it rains (Maraka, malefic ADs), the umbrella keeps you dry. Rajayoga keeps growing.
Section 6
Rahu & Ketu Special Rules

Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets — they have not been allotted the ownership of any sign. They occupy a sign only by placement. According to Satyacharya, Rahu-Ketu acts as a representative of: (i) the owner of the sign they are placed in, and (ii) the planets they are in conjunction with or aspected by.

PrioritySourceWhat to look forExample
1stConjunct planetPlanet sitting WITH Rahu/Ketu gives strongest colourRahu + Jupiter = Rahu behaves like Jupiter
2ndAspecting planetPlanet casting aspect ON Rahu/KetuMars aspects Rahu = Rahu gets Mars energy
3rdSign lord (Dispositor)Planet that OWNS the sign where Rahu/Ketu sitsRahu in Taurus = Venus is dispositor
4thBirth & NavamshaCheck position in D1 and D9Cross-reference both charts
5thNakshatra lordLord of the Nakshatra Rahu/Ketu occupiesRahu in nakshatra of Venus = Venus's results too

Worked Examples from Classical Texts

Example 1: Rahu in the 10th house (Aquarius) conjunct Mercury (owner of 2nd and 5th). Rahu acts as Mercury's agent and gives results of the 2nd, 5th, and 10th houses.

Example 2: Rahu aspected by Moon (owner of 3rd, placed in 4th). Rahu also signifies matters of the 3rd, 4th, and 10th houses as Moon's representative.

Historical Examples In Mahatma Gandhi's horoscope, Rahu is placed in the 10th house (Cancer sign) in conjunction with Moon (10th lord). He became Mahatma, Yogi, Tapasvi, and attained worldwide fame in the mahadasha of Rahu.

Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister of India in the antardasha of Rahu placed in the 12th house (Cancer sign). Both examples show Rahu giving powerful results in Cancer — one of its favourable signs.
Rajayoga by Rahu/Ketu
Rahu or Ketu forms Rajayoga when placed in Trikona with a Kendra lord, OR in Kendra with a Trikona lord. Rahu gives favourable results in Aries, Taurus, and Cancer. Rahu acts as Maraka for Scorpio & Capricorn ascendants.
Section 7
Malefic-Benefic Combination Rules

What happens when malefic and benefic planets interact in dasha-antardasha without a proper PACKT relationship:

#SituationResult
P9Malefic MD + Benefic AD (not related)Troublesome. Without connection, the benefic has no power to override. If associated = mixed.
Surprising P10Malefic MD + Yogakaraka AD (not associated)Exceedingly bad! Without association, the malefic MD overpowers the Yogakaraka completely.
P11Maraka MD + Benefic ADBenefic does NOT become Maraka. But: Malefic AD unassociated with Maraka MD = surest death indication. (Always check longevity calculation before pronouncing such results.)
P10 is Counterintuitive
Most people assume Yogakaraka always helps. But without ASSOCIATION (PACKT) to the malefic MD lord, it makes things WORSE. Compare with P5 where Yogakaraka as MD lord protects even against Maraka — the difference is who holds the reins (MD lord).
Section 8
Venus-Saturn & Rajayoga Combinations

Venus = worldly pleasures, desire, material comforts (Guru of the demons — pulls you into life's pleasures). Saturn = detachment, discipline, separation, spiritual austerity (planet of Vairagya — pulls you away). They pull in opposite directions.

When they agree (associated, well-placed) = clear, positive results. When they conflict (unrelated, 2/12 or 6/8) = tension, indecision, frustration.

How to Analyze Venus-Saturn Periods
If one is weak and the other strong, it can still be a period of good luck. If placed mutually 2/12 or 6/8, they may not produce good results. For each sub-sub-period, analyze: (1) their lordship — Good, Yogakaraka, Evil, or Maraka? (2) placement from birth lagna, and (3) position in navamsha chart.

Rajayoga Combinations

#CombinationResult
P13Lagna lord in 10th + 10th lord in Lagna, OR both conjoined in 1st or 10thRajayoga + great fame. Lifelong promise. Results come in dashas of Lagna lord or 10th lord.
P14Lagna lord in 9th + 9th lord in Lagna, OR both conjoined in 1st or 9thRajayoga + great fame. Lifelong promise. Results come in dashas of Lagna lord or 10th lord.

Note on 11th Lord
11th is a house of gains, but also a Trishadaya house (3, 6, 11), so its lord gives a mixed bag — gains accompanied by obstacles and health fears.
Section 10
Types of Dashas (Dasha Tattwam)

Foundational rule: A planet gives results of its placement in a house, its placement in a sign, its aspects on various houses and planets, its conjunction with other planets, and the means of livelihood attributed to it — all during its dasha and antardasha. The categories below describe how the planet's strength modifies these results:

TypeMeaningWhen?Result
SampoornExtra-ordinaryVery strong per Shadbala or at highest degree of exaltationAll-round prosperity. Grace of Goddess Lakshmi.
PoornaFullest extentStrong and exaltedWealth and prosperity
RiktaEmptyWeak per Shadbala or debilitatedLoss of wealth, obstacles, diseases
AnishtaUndesirableExtreme debilitation + enemy sign + debilitation navamshaLoss of health, wealth, luck — worst quality
AarohiniGoing UP ↑Moving toward exaltationAuspicious — improving. But: enemy/debilitation navamsha reduces the good.
AvrohiniGoing DOWN ↓Moving toward debilitationWorst results. But: friendly/own/exalted navamsha softens to medium.
ShubhBeneficIn exaltation, own, friendly, mooltrikona, or vargottamshaBenefic results across the board
NeshtaDestroyedCombust + debilitated + enemy sign + debilitation navamshaExtremely bad results
UttamaExcellentIn kendra or trikona + aspected by beneficsExcellent results
STRENGTH: Sampoorn (best) > Poorna > Shubh > Uttama > ... > Rikta > Neshta > Anishta (worst)
DIRECTION: Aarohini (going UP = improving)  vs  Avrohini (going DOWN = declining)
Surprising Rikta Dasha Exception
According to Sage Parashara, a debilitated planet that is lord of 3rd, 6th, or 8th AND is placed in 3rd, 6th, 8th, or 11th house AND the lagna lord is strong — actually gives EXCELLENT results. (Vipareet Rajayoga logic — weak dusthana lord in dusthana = bad cancels bad = good.)

Poorvardha & Uttarardha (First Half vs Second Half)

A planet strong in rashi (D1) — exaltation, mooltrikona, own, or friendly sign — but occupying a navamsha (D9) that is its debilitation or enemy, gives good results in the first half (Poorvardha) and mixed results in the second half (Uttarardha). Rashi strength dominates initially; navamsha weakness gradually surfaces.

Lagna Dasha Phala — Drekkana Rule

What is a Drekkana? Each sign (30°) is divided into 3 Drekkanas of 10° each. The 1st Drekkana (0-10°) is ruled by the sign lord itself, the 2nd (10-20°) by the lord of the 5th sign from it, the 3rd (20-30°) by the lord of the 9th sign.

Lagna TypeExamples1st Drekkana2nd Drekkana3rd Drekkana
Moveable (Char)Aries, Cancer, Libra, CapricornBESTMediumWorst
Fixed (Sthir)Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, AquariusWorstBESTMedium
Dual (Dwiswabhava)Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, PiscesWorstMediumBEST

Upachaya houses (3, 6, 11): A planet placed here gives desirable results (Abhishta Siddhi) during its dasha. These are "growth" houses — a planet here grows stronger with time, especially with a 10th house connection.

Section 11
Retrograde Planet Dasha (Vakra Gati) — In Detail

When a planet appears to move backward in the zodiac (as seen from Earth), it is called Vakri (retrograde). This apparent backward motion has real effects on dasha results.

Core Rules

General effect: The dasha of a retrograde planet injures one's honour and happiness. Embarrassment, loss of reputation, setbacks in status.

Malefic retrograde: Causes grief, purposeless wandering, confusion, aimlessness. Especially severe when also aspected by another malefic.

Surprising Benefic Planet Retrograde
According to Saravali by Kalyan Varma, a benefic planet (lord of 1, 5, 9) in retrogression actually becomes STRONGER — capable of conferring great power, even a kingdom. However, results may arrive through unexpected or delayed routes.

MD Lord Retrograde vs AD Lord Retrograde

Which planet is retrograde?DurationHow it plays out
MD lord retrogradeEntire major period (6–20 years)Whole mahadasha carries retrograde energy. Benefic MD retro = success through unusual routes. Malefic MD retro = entire period feels chaotic.
AD lord retrogradeOnly that sub-period (months to 2-3 years)MD lord's energy remains dominant. Temporary reversal during that sub-period, passes when AD ends.
Both retrogradeIntensified during sub-periodBoth malefic = extreme difficulty. Both benefic = surprisingly powerful. One each = turbulent, mixed.

House Effects & Amplification

Deficiency: Retrograde planet creates deficiency in TWO areas — the house it sits in AND the house(s) it rules. Those areas suffer delays, reversals, incompleteness.

Amplification: A retrograde planet increases the effect of any planet it is conjunct with or aspects — magnifying good if benefic, magnifying bad if malefic.

Worked Example
Retrograde Saturn sits in 7th house, rules 10th house. During Saturn dasha: delays/reversals in marriage (7th — where it sits) AND career setbacks (10th — what it rules).
Section 12
Danger Signals in Antardasha

Five red flags in a birth chart that make certain dasha periods painful:

Signal 1 — Enemy of Lagna Lord or Moon Sign Lord

When: The dasha lord is a natural enemy of your lagna lord or Moon sign lord.

Result: Loss of intelligence, confusion, poor decisions. Problems with authorities.

Why: Lagna lord = your identity. Moon sign lord = your mind. An enemy attacks both.

Signal 2 — Planet Associated with Rahu

When: The dasha lord is conjunct, aspected by, or linked to Rahu.

Result: Deception, illusion, sudden reversals, obsessive behaviour, addiction.

Why: Rahu = maya (illusion). Any planet it touches gets "contaminated."

Signal 3 — Lagna Lord in 8th House

When: Your ascendant lord is placed in the 8th house in the birth chart.

Result: VERY painful results — health crises, sudden losses, psychological upheaval.

Why: Lagna lord = YOU. 8th house = death and hidden dangers. "You" sitting in the death house.

Signal 4 — MD & AD Lords in 2/12 or 6/8

When: Count the houses between MD and AD lord positions. If 2/12 or 6/8 apart.

Result: Obstacles, loss of position, wealth, mental disturbances.

2/12 = "back-to-back" — disconnect, financial drain. 6/8 = "at war" — active conflict, illness, crises. 6/8 is worse.

Signal 5 — Malefic MD + Inimical Malefic AD

When: Both MD and AD lords are functional malefics AND natural enemies of each other.

Result: Extremely adverse — the worst combination in this chapter.

Why: Two malefics pulling in opposite destructive directions. No relief from either side.

Section 13
Ishta Phala & Kashta Phala

From Kesava Jataka Paddhati. A mathematical way to determine whether a planet's dasha will be net good or net bad.

TermMeaningBased on
Ishta PhalaBenefic strength — how much good the planet can deliverUchcha Bala (exaltation strength) + Cheshta Bala (motional strength)
Kashta PhalaMalefic strength — how much bad the planet can deliverMathematical complement of Ishta Phala

Ishta > Kashta = good dasha. Kashta > Ishta = bad dasha. Both equal = mixed.

When to use: Ishta/Kashta is the TIEBREAKER. When other methods give conflicting signals — e.g., benefic by lordship but weak by placement — this cuts through the confusion.

Other Modifiers

FactorEffect
Digbali (directionally strong)Brings name and fame. Jupiter/Mercury = East (1st), Sun/Mars = South (10th), Saturn = West (7th), Moon/Venus = North (4th).
Planet in Upachaya (3, 6, 11)Gives desirable results (Abhishta Siddhi), especially with 10th house connection.
Poorvardha (1st half)If strong in rashi but weak in navamsha, good results in 1st half only. Second half declines.
Section 14
Mahadasha + Antardasha Result Matrix

The quick-reference grid. MD sets the "season," AD sets the "weather" within that season:

MD \ AD
Benefic AD
Malefic AD
Benefic MD
Happiness & Prosperity
Both good = best period. Everything flows. Success multiplies.
Good Start, Bad End
Benefic MD protects initially, but malefic AD spoils the ending.
Malefic MD
Bad Start, Good End
Malefic MD causes initial suffering, but benefic AD brings relief toward the end.
Trouble Throughout
Loss of wealth, enemies, fear, mental disturbance. No relief. Endure and wait.
MEMORY TRICK — SEASON + WEATHER:
MD = Season: Benefic = Summer, Malefic = Winter
AD = Weather: Benefic = Sunny, Malefic = Stormy
Summer + Sunny = Perfect  |  Summer + Storm = good start, bad end
Winter + Sunny = bad start, good end  |  Winter + Storm = terrible throughout
